National Historic Marker Weekend 2026 takes place

Friday, April 24 through Sunday, April 26!

"This free, family-friendly volunteer event invites neighbors, friends, and families nationwide to clean and care for historical markers in their communities. With this year’s theme, “Your Hometown,” it’s a fun way to learn local history, give back, and spend time with the people around you. What makes your hometown history unique?

Historical markers can be found everywhere, along roadsides, in parks, downtown streets, and at historic sites. According to The Historical Marker Database, there are more than 227,000 markers across the United States, many of which have not been cleaned or maintained in years. National Historic Marker Weekend helps communities come together to preserve these local landmarks and make history shine again."

Photo Challenge

Have fun and participate in our Photo Challenge! Take lots of photos during your marker cleaning project and post them on social media with the hashtags #NationalHistoricMarkerWeekend and #PomeroyFoundation. Be sure to tag or mention the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association!

This year’s theme is “Your Hometown.” Capture your community’s unique stories and share photos of the markers that make your hometown history special.
